Moonbase-One
Backstory
Moonbase-One was written in 1980, only 8 years after the final Apollo mission and as the Space Shuttle missions were starting - everyone thought we would have a base on the Moon really soon. In the movie '2001: A Space Odyssey' they lived on the Moon in Clavius Base which was established around 1999 (in the 1968 book). What would that be like - regular trips to the Moon, staying at the Lunar Hilton, breathing purified air, travelling on to Mars - instead of the pollution and unrest of Earth?
Lyrics
Well it's good to be back on Moon-base One I've been to Earth, it ain't much fun Now I'm here, I have to say I'm really sorry I went away. The streets were crammed with garbage cans The smog’s so thick it slows the fans And people fight to stop the war While the President's men keep the score... but Life here is just a dream The view is great and the water's clean And I don't think I'll be going down again. No motor cars, no crowded bars Next weekend I'm going to Mars You know it beats a holiday in Spain. Late at night when they cut the lights And the boys come in from the shuttle flights We grab a drink and have a 'smoke' or two And watch the Earth going down so blue. The lunar scenes are something strange All the greys and greens of the mountain range I can't tell the thrill it brings I wouldn't trade it for anything... 'cause Life here is just a dream The view is great and the water's clean And I don't think I'll be going down again. No motor cars, no crowded bars Next weekend I'm going to Mars You know it beats a holiday in Spain. [Instrumental Saxophone solo] haaah... 'cause... Life here is just a dream The view is great and the water's clean And I don't think I'll be going down again. No motor cars, no crowded bars Next weekend I'm going to Mars You know it beats a holiday in Spain… And I'm not going down again. La da da da-da da de da Do-doot’n do-de-doot doot’n-doot - zahhh!!!
